After the war, Asakichi (Shintaro Katsu), who had returned home for the first time in over a decade, was deeply moved by the drastically changed Japan. In his hometown of Kawachi, a grave had even been erected due to a false report of his death. Furthermore, upon learning that Okino (Tamao Nakamura) had become someone else's wife, he rejected her tearful regrets and went to the black market in Osaka to visit Oteru (Reiko Fujiwara), the widow of Sada, who had died. Feeling indebted to Sada's family for dying in his place, he returned to his home in Kawachi with Sada's mother, Ofuku. However, on the night of his welcome party in the village, Tsukiyo (Yuko Hamano), the younger sister of his childhood friend who had died in the war, was raped by an occupying soldier and disappeared. Asakichi went to Osaka again to search for Tsukiyo. He learned about Seiji, Sada's younger brother, from Ofuku and, knowing that he was involved in a yakuza business in Osaka, also searched for Seiji.
