Founded during the Keicho era (1596-1614) by the 16th head priest of the head temple Honkokuji, Kuju-in Nichishin. The main hall was constructed during the Keicho era, with the assistance of Hideaki Kobayakawa, by relocating and rebuilding the guest hall of Fushimi Momoyama Castle. The Nio Gate was relocated from the south gate of the Honkokuji guest hall in 1616. The Nio statues are said to be the work of Unkei. Among the temple's treasures is a wagon koto (a type of zither) bestowed upon Kogo no Tsubone by Emperor Takakura. This was donated by Hideaki Kobayakawa. This offering is a set of two items: a goshuin (temple stamp) and a history document. This is a Nichiren Buddhist temple located on the hillside of Mt. Ogura, known for the "Hyakunin Isshu" (One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets). The mountain path leading from the Sanmon gate to the Nio Gate and the main hall is a tunnel of approximately 200 maple trees in autumn, making it one of the best spots for autumn leaves in Sagano. West of the main hall, which was relocated from the guest hall of Fushimi Castle, is a long, narrow pond, and further on are the Tahoto pagoda and the Kashi no Uta Senji (a hall dedicated to poetry). Within the grounds is a mountain garden where over a hundred species of wild plants can be seen. Special seasonal flower exhibitions are held, such as the Bonbai Exhibition in early March, the Peony Exhibition in early May, and the Water Lily Exhibition in late July.
