This is a piece purchased from Kamano-sawa Pottery. This work is a type of pottery called "yakishime," which is fired in an old-style anagama kiln, representing the most primitive and simple form of pottery. When fired with red pine firewood for at least five days at a high temperature of 1250 degrees Celsius, various effects such as ash covering, fire color, charring, and stone bursts appear. These are created by the flames flowing through the kiln, and the resulting appearance varies depending on the weather on the day of firing, the firewood used, and the atmosphere inside the kiln. No two pieces are exactly alike. Potters hope for the kiln's natural transformations and continue firing, simply praying to the kiln. "Yakishime" can be said to be a gift from the earth and fire. As you use it over time, it will become more settled and you will be able to enjoy the beauty of the clay. When using yakishime ware, please soak it in plenty of water before use. After use, please dry it thoroughly before storing it.
