Author Profile Hōan Kosugi (December 30, 1881 - 1964) was a Western-style painter, Japanese-style painter, poet, and essayist who lived during the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods. He was born in Nikko Town, Kamitsuga District, Tochigi Prefecture, as the son of Tomisaburo, a Shinto priest of Futarasan Shrine. His father was a scholar of Japanese classical literature. From 1903, he worked at the Kinji Gahosha, founded by Doppo Kunikida, drawing illustrations and also working on manga. He was dispatched to the front lines as a war correspondent for the magazine "Kinji Gahō" during the Russo-Japanese War, which began in 1904. He greatly contributed to the magazine's popularity with his realistic battle paintings and humorous manga-style illustrations. In November 1904, he published the anti-war poetry collection "Jinchu Shihen." In 1905, he co-founded the art magazine "Heitan" with Hakutei Ishii and Mororo Kanamoki. In 1908, he built a new house in Tabata and became a member of the "Tabata Literary Village," where he left behind unique ink paintings that could be called neo-literati paintings. In 1925, he worked on the murals of the Yasuda Auditorium at the University of Tokyo. In 1927, he designed the "Black Lion Flag," the championship flag for the Intercity Baseball Tournament. In January 1954, he was invited to the Imperial New Year's Poetry Reading. In 1958, he became an honorary citizen of Nikko City. In the autumn of the same year, he resigned as a member of the Japan Art Academy due to his advanced age. This is a copy of Hōan Kosugi's "Hōan Gadan," published by Chuo Koron Bijutsu Shuppan in July 1980, with the original box and obi. There is little yellowing due to age, and there are no stains, writing, or library stamps. Please consider purchasing this book, understanding that it is a 45-year-old used book. *Also, "Furusato" (first edition, 1957) by Hōan Kosugi is also on sale.
