Henri Matisse, of Fauvism (Wild Beasts), who revolutionized color, and Pablo Picasso, of Cubism (Cubist), who revolutionized form. In 1906, they met at the apartment of American writer Gertrude Stein, and from the following year, they began exchanging each other's works. Picasso, who held deep respect for Matisse, who was more than 10 years his senior, and Matisse, who gently cherished and trusted his friendship with Picasso. Sometimes they visited each other's homes and exchanged letters, but their friendship was not straightforward. In Matisse's words, "as different as the North and South Poles," the two were stimulating rivals who were always conscious of and in conflict with each other's work. Appearing is Françoise Gilot, famous as both a painter and Picasso's lover. Sometimes as a bridge between the two masters, sometimes as a buffer, she, who felt their friendship and lives most closely, tells anecdotes of the time.
