He was the eldest son of the Confucian scholar Jinsai Ito and the second head of his private school, Kogido. His younger half-brother was the Confucian scholar Kaitei Ito, and his mother, Kana, was a cousin of Ogata Korin and Kenzan. His real name was Nagatsugu. His azana (courtesy name) were Genzo, Genzo, and Genzo. His other pen name was Taso-sai. His posthumous name was Shōjutsu-sensei. His younger brothers were Baiu, Kaitei, Chikuri, and Rangū.
