Real name, Kimitake Hiraoka. After graduating from the Faculty of Law at the University of Tokyo in 1947 (Showa 22), he worked for the Ministry of Finance but resigned after 9 months to begin his writing career. In 1949, he published his first original novel, "Confessions of a Mask," establishing himself as a writer. His major works include "The Sound of the Waves" (Shinchosha Literary Award) in 1954, "The Temple of the Golden Pavilion" (Yomiuri Literary Award) in 1956, and "Madame de Sade" (Geijutsusai Award) in 1965. On November 25, 1970, after completing the final manuscript of the fourth volume of "The Sea of Fertility," "The Decay of the Angel," he committed suicide at the Self-Defense Forces' Ichigaya Camp. Mishima's literature has been translated into various foreign languages and is read worldwide.
