This is an extremely rare cornet (serial number 5460) made by the prestigious 19th-century French instrument workshop "Couturier à Lyon." The bell is engraved with "Couturier à Lyon / Fournisseur breveté de la Maison de l’Empereur (Patent Supplier to the Emperor's House)," a valuable indication that it was supplied to the Imperial Military Band and court orchestras during the Second French Empire (reign of Napoleon III, 1852-1870). This instrument comes with interchangeable tuning slides (crooks) that allow for tuning in B♭, as well as A, A♭, and G. It also includes additional slides for changing between high and low pitch. This reflects the historical context and allows for flexible use according to the performance styles and ensemble practices of the time. Remarkably, the airtightness is preserved, and while not comparable to a new instrument, it is in a condition that allows for sufficient playing. The surface has a beautiful patina. ■ Explanation The Couturier workshop was founded in 1812 and was a prestigious workshop in Lyon, France, that manufactured brass instruments. In particular, instruments made by Jacques Couturier in the 1850s and 60s, who officially obtained the patent of Adolphe Sax, established the workshop's position as an official supplier to the French Imperial Court. It was highly valued by the Lyon military band and music schools. This instrument is an example made during the golden age of the Couturier workshop and is an extremely valuable artifact that conveys the instrument-making techniques and performance culture of the time. Compared to musical instrument museums and historical brass collections both domestically and internationally, the number of extant examples is extremely small, and considering its condition and completeness of accessories, it is a superb piece.
