This is a wooden tool box with a "chirashi-kawa" (scattered bark) pattern, made of cherry bark (sakuragawa-zaiku), a traditional Japanese craft from Kakunodate, Akita. The lid features elaborate "chirashi-kawa" craftsmanship. The lid also has mother-of-pearl inlaid plants, creating a deep impression. The cherry bark becomes more lustrous with age, making it a masterpiece that rivals lacquerware. Please forgive any slight errors in the dimensions, as they are amateur measurements.
