The family crest engraved on the hairpin is a Nakatsu Mokko crest, which depicts a Mokko crest in a horizontally elongated cross shape, further surrounded by a cross frame. This crest itself has been around for a long time, but because it has two crosses, one inside and one outside, it is said to have been favored by some devout Christians. The golden cross-shaped bead netsuke is made by applying thin gold leaf inside the glass. The construction is similar to the gold sandwich beads known as ancient gold tonbo-dama (glass beads), but it is not known whether the inside is genuine gold. Also, the glass layer is quite thin, like blown glass, so there are parts where it is cracked or glass fragments remain on the string.
