This is a traditional ikat (warp-ikat weaving) from Alor Island, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. I purchased it locally in 2002. This ikat uses hand-spun yarn for the weft and is hand-woven. It features the traditional colors of Alor Island. Regarding the colors, the darker parts use yarn dyed with natural dyes. The black is extracted from indigo. The other colors are likely chemical dyes. Size: 13 x 136cm (+ 3cm fringe) Although unused, it has been stored for a long time, so I washed it once before listing it. The motifs are geometric patterns often seen in Alor.
