This is a Javanese batik I found in Sumatra about 30 years ago. I was told it was about 30 years old at the time, so it would be about 60 years old now. A characteristic of Sumatran batik is the jagged, sawtooth pattern on the edges, which is large and imposing here. This piece is a large cloth featuring a multi-colored diamond pattern. The process involved applying wax and dyeing repeatedly for each color, requiring a great deal of time and effort. Furthermore, wax was also applied to the reverse side. Dyeing both sides without cutting corners is a characteristic of Javanese batik. This piece isn't extremely old, but upon close inspection, there are a few small moth holes, about 3-4mm in size. They are located under the taped area, and there may be a few others elsewhere. This is somewhat unavoidable with antique textiles from the tropical, hot, and humid climate of Indonesia. - Design: Multi-colored diamond pattern and floral motifs - Colors: Black, red, green, purple, gold - Size: Approximate dimensions: Length: approx. 238cm, Width: approx. 105cm Thank you for looking.
