Naomi Kawase, the director of "The Mourning Forest," depicts human love and impermanence through the love and growth of a 16-year-old boy and girl against the backdrop of the magnificent nature of Amami Oshima, a land where gods and humans have coexisted since ancient times. Kaito, who lives in Amami Oshima, discovers the body of a man floating in the sea on the night of the full moon of the August dance, and Kyoko, a classmate, sees Kaito. Kyoko's mother, Isa, is revered by the islanders as a Yuta (shaman), but has been given a terminal diagnosis by a doctor. Kyoko, feeling a contradiction in the existence of her mother, who cannot escape death despite being called a god, vents her feelings to Kaito. Meanwhile, Kaito has mixed feelings about his mother, Misaki, who has a lover, and he visits his father, who lives in Tokyo and whom he was separated from as a child, with those feelings in his heart. And when Kaito returns from Tokyo, his mother has disappeared... Nijiro Murakami, the son of singer UA and actor Jun Murakami, was selected to play Kaito through an audition, making his acting debut.
