This is a Sun Surf Aloha shirt special edition. The design was printed in Kyoto in the 1970s and exported to the United States as shirt fabric by the Japanese trading company, Triple Times California. It is a highly accomplished piece of fabric, created by meticulously carved patterns that were repeatedly layered, making it an excellent work by skilled craftsmen. The design is based on a "Thangka," a Tibetan Buddhist hanging scroll, originally used by monks to explain doctrines in an easy-to-understand manner during missionary work. This fabric also features motifs found in Tibetan Buddhist art, such as "Padmasambhava," the founder of Tibetan Esoteric Buddhism, and "Yab-Yum," a symbol of male and female deities. The work's title, "Mandala," means "circle" in Sanskrit, representing a complete and fulfilling state. It is also a diagram showing the state of enlightenment and exists in Japanese culture as a "Mandala" where gods and Buddhas gather. The design is really cool. I will not measure the length or width.
