This is a two-line calligraphy by Katsu Kaishu, one of the Bakumatsu San-shu (Three Vessels of the Late Shogunate). Katsu Kaishu is famous for meeting with Saigo Takamori during the turbulent Bakumatsu period and saving Edo from the ravages of war. He was also active in various other ways, making him one of the most well-known figures of the late shogunate. Besides Katsu Kaishu, the Bakumatsu San-shu also includes Yamaoka Tesshu and Takahashi Deishu, all three being renowned for their calligraphy skills. This calligraphy is skillfully written, though difficult to read, and is in very good condition. The dimensions are: 198 cm in length (including the mounting), 48 cm in width (including the mounting), 135 cm in length (image size), and 35 cm in width (image size).
