The film "The Sea Watches" by director Kei Kumai is a 2002 adaptation of a screenplay left by Akira Kurosawa. Set in the pleasure quarters of Edo's Fukagawa district, it's a human drama depicting the tragic love between a courtesan, Oshin (Misa Shimizu), and a young, disowned samurai, Fusanosuke (Nagiko Tono). Based on several novels by Shugoro Yamamoto, it features costume design by Kazuko Kurosawa and art direction by Takeo Kimura, and is also known as Kumai's final work.
