In 1591 (Tensho 19), the Kasei and Osaki clans, who were the last to resist Toyotomi Hideyoshi's unification of Japan, formed a citizen's alliance and launched a major uprising, barricading themselves in Sanuma Castle. At Hideyoshi's command, Date Masamune besieged the castle, but he was at a loss due to the impregnable Sanuma water area, which was a deep swamp. He prayed at Tsushima Shrine, and suddenly, a flock of white herons flew in and landed in the shallows of the swamp. Masamune, realizing it was not a deep swamp, attacked the besieged army at once and captured the castle. Later, in 1614 (Keicho 19), Masamune ordered the lord Tsuda Minbu Kageyasu to protect the castle, and moved Tsushima Shrine to its current location in the castle town. To ensure there would be no further rebellions at Sanuma Castle, the shrine was built facing north towards Sanuma Castle, and was enshrined as the general guardian deity of Sanuma, Gion Goutennou. People revered it as "Gotennousan," and it is still affectionately called by this name and is highly respected.
