In the early 19th century in Bohemia, a high-tech technique was developed to color the surface of glass red or yellow by replacing the lithium oxide and copper or silver ions contained in the glass raw materials. This technique could also color the parts of the glass that were cut or engraved, and it was easy to remove the colored parts, making it a very convenient coloring method compared to the very labor-intensive techniques like cameo glass. Many decorations on Bohemian glass use this ion exchange coloring method. This is a typical example where the surface is colored copper red by ion exchange, and then the copper red part is removed by acid etching, leaving the red pattern of plants and human figures.
