12th Tobei Tahara (Holder of Prefectural Intangible Cultural Property of Hagi Ware) 1925 (Taisho 14) - 1991 (Heisei 3) 12th Tobei Tahara was born in Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, as the second son of the 10th Tobei Tahara. His real name was Genjiro. In 1944 (Showa 19), he was drafted while attending the former Yamaguchi High School (Yamaguchi University) and went to Manchuria. In 1945 (Showa 20), he was interned in Siberia after the end of the war. In 1948 (Showa 23), he was repatriated from Siberia. As his elder brother, the 11th Tobei Tahara, had no successor, he engaged in pottery to succeed the family business. In 1956 (Showa 31), he succeeded the name of the 12th Tobei Tahara. In 1972 (Showa 47), he became a regular member of the Japan Kogei Association. In 1981 (Showa 56), he was designated as a Prefectural Intangible Cultural Property of Yamaguchi Prefecture. Known for his gentle personality, he was particularly skilled in making tea bowls. His wife was a supportive partner who was well-versed in the Urasenke school of tea ceremony.
