In 1957, he was selected for the All Yomimono Newcomer's Prize by Bungeishunju with "Oyakodon" and began writing. He is a leading figure, and his representative work "Hana to Hebi" (Flower and Snake) has been made into films multiple times. He declared a writing hiatus in '89, but resumed writing in earnest in '95 with "Shinken-shi Koike Shigeaki," which depicts the legendary shogi player who gambled. It became a bestseller and gained popularity.
