This is a set of five Wajima-nuri soup bowls with camellia maki-e (sprinkled design). The kanji for "camellia" (椿) is written with the characters for "wood" and "spring." Camellias, which herald the arrival of spring, have been considered a symbol of a bright future. As a sacred flower, they are widely planted in shrines and temples, and they appear in The Tale of Genji as a flower that wards off evil. It is said that Toyotomi Hideyoshi favored camellias for tea flowers, and that Tokugawa Hidetada, the second shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, planted and loved camellias in the garden of his palace, leading to their popularity among feudal lords, court nobles, and commoners alike. Camellias are a popular motif in Wajima-nuri lacquerware. There is little sign of use, and there are no noticeable scratches or stains.
