This is a double-selvedge bandana with a polka-dot pattern, highly sought after in the vintage market. It's woven on a rare dedicated loom, so you can see the selvedge (edges) on both sides of the fabric. While most bandanas have selvedge on one side, even older ones like this have selvedge on both sides. This is because in the early days of shuttle looms, which were old-style power looms, the technology was still immature, and there was a high risk of weaving defects due to the long distance the weft yarn had to travel. Because the fabric width was narrow, instead of taking two pieces side-by-side, they took one piece as is, resulting in selvedge on both sides. The fabric is indigo-dyed, so it's also characterized by noticeable fading.
