This is a cup & saucer set from Sodeshi Kiln in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. 《About Sodeshi Kiln》 Sodeshi-yaki was established in 1877. The first generation was Tomoichi Ono. The location was Oji-zaka, Kaminoki, Matsue City. The second generation, Iwajiro, moved the kiln to Sodeshiura on the shore of Lake Shinji in 1893, where it is currently located. He visited other pottery areas such as Kyoto, Seto, and Arita to conduct research. He created pottery that differed from Fujina-yaki. Later, it was renamed Sodeshi-yaki. The third generation, Toshiro, was mentored by Soetsu Yanagi, Kanjiro Kawai, and Bernard Leach, and the kiln became known as a folk craft kiln. The sake vessels exhibited at the Brussels World Exposition in 1958 won the Grand Prix. Using Izumo techniques and local soil and materials, they create pottery for everyday use. The characteristics of Sodeshi Kiln are based on the techniques passed down in Izumo, using local soil and materials. They are made with durability, ease of use, and a certain warmth, aiming to create pottery for everyday use. The glazes used include earth glaze, persimmon glaze, gosuyaki, straw white glaze, bran white glaze, and cinnabar, etc. Techniques such as kakewake (divided glaze), nukiro-mon (wax resist), iron painting, hakeme (brush marks), kugibori (nail carving), and kushime (comb marks) are used. The most significant characteristic of Sodeshi Kiln is that the vessels are made with consideration for the user and their dining table. It gives the impression of folk craft pottery that adapts to changes in people's lives and meets the needs of the users. The pottery is very sincere, as can be seen from the artisans of Sodeshi Kiln who face their vessels every day without arrogance. 【Size】Cup: φ7 x 7.5cm Saucer: φ15 x 2cm ※Please note that we cannot ship on weekends and holidays. #Pottery #Mingei (Folk Craft) #Crafts #Artist'sWork #Artisan #Handmade #Handmade
