August Gemünder & Sons was established in New York, USA in 1866. Later, his sons joined the business, and the company was renamed August Gemünder & Sons in 1890. It seems they manufactured their own instruments and also refurbished and set up instruments sourced from Germany, France, etc., before selling them. They used vividly colored varnish, and they were successful commercially, skillfully utilizing advertising to gain popularity. The company closed completely in 1946. This violin with its rounded corners and unique shape appears to have been conceived around 1850 by the Russian violin maker Rigart Rubus. Copy models were manufactured in Germany, and it is believed that this instrument was also made in Germany and then purchased and sold by Gemünder. Due to its shape, this model seems to be fragile, and not many in good playing condition remain. It also appears to be difficult to repair.
