A kinuta-shaped flower vase, perfect for an autumn tea ceremony. In the past, fibers such as hemp and kudzu used for kimono were stiff, so they were beaten with a kinuta (a wooden mallet) to soften them. The sound of the beating echoing from afar on long autumn nights (distant kinuta, kinuta rhythm) became a symbol of autumn. The accompanying box is stamped with "Hagi-yaki Kinuta Flower Vase, 13th Toubei Tahara." The changes in the glaze, especially around the lower part of the flower vase, create a beautiful landscape that complements the tea flowers. The Toubei seal is stamped on the side of the lower part. Born as the eldest son of the 12th Toubei Tahara, a potter of Hagi-yaki who served the Hagi clan for generations. After graduating from the Graduate School of Musashino Art University in 1975, he studied under Shigetoshi Nakazato in Karatsu. In 1977, he formed the Gogawa-kai with Toyozo Arakawa. In 1992, he succeeded the 13th Toubei. In 1993, he became a regular member of the Japan Kogei Association. In 1997, he held the Fukagawa Hagi 5-person exhibition in New York and a solo exhibition in Seattle. In 1999, he received the Yamaguchi Prefecture Arts and Culture Promotion Encouragement Award. In 2000, he exhibited at the 400th Anniversary of Hagi-yaki in Paris. In 2015, he received the Yamaguchi Prefecture Award (for contributions to art and culture). He has also won numerous awards and selections in public exhibitions.
