Born in Tokyo, 1913 - 1996 Known as a devout Christian (Protestant), he was a leading figure in stencil-dyed prints. He studied Bingata dyeing techniques under Keisuke Serizawa, a representative Japanese dyeing artist, and in 1947, he applied these techniques to create his first stencil-dyed print, "The Book of Ruth," which won the Japan Folk Crafts Museum Award and the Kokuga Prize. Since then, he continued to express the world of the Bible through stencil-dyed prints, and was one of the leading artists representing contemporary Christian art in Japan.
