Tamaki, which is 1,076m above sea level, at the southern end of the Omine mountain range, and is said to have been visited by Emperor Jimmu on his way to the east. The shrine was founded in 37 BC during the reign of Emperor Sujin, the 10th emperor, to enshrine Hayatama no Kami for the protection of the royal castle and to ward off evil spirits. Since ancient times, it has been one of the training grounds for the Kumano and Omine Shugen, which extends from Kumano to Yoshino. During the Heian period, it became a mixture of Shinto and Buddhism, and was called Tamaki Sanjo Gongen or the inner sanctuary of the Kumano Sanzan, and flourished as a sacred place. During the Edo period, the Betto-ji Takamuro-in was established.
