Symphony 1997 "Heaven, Earth, Mankind" by Tan Dun (born August 18, 1957, in Changsha, Hunan Province, China). This performance features composer Tan Dun, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Yo-Yo Ma (cello), and a children's choir, among others. The piece was composed for the "Handover of Hong Kong" ceremony on July 1, 1997, and utilizes the bianzhong, an ancient Chinese instrument dating back 2400 years (photo 6). Tan Dun's works also include very unique pieces such as "Water Concerto" and "Paper Concerto," which are endlessly fascinating. Both pieces were released on DVD, and those interested may want to seek them out.
