During funerals, the funeral palanquin (sangyeo), which carried the deceased, was decorated with colorful wooden figures of flowers, dragons, birds, family members, servants, and entertainers to comfort the deceased and serve them in the afterlife. This item is one such figure, known as a mogin, mogu, or kokudo. Such elaborate funeral palanquins were reused over time, but they were discarded with modernization, and decorations like wooden figures began to appear on the market. Many have found their way into private collections, and while many new ones are available, this item is a simple yet exquisite piece with age.
