Both under Kuroda Seiki, they became instructors at the Tokyo Fine Arts School, and in 1937, they were simultaneously awarded the Order of Culture. Takeji Fujishima (1867-1943) and Saburosuke Okada (1869-1939), lifelong rivals, led the Japanese Western-style painting world. The exhibition features representative works that highlight the characteristics of each artist: Fujishima, who moved from romantic female figures to powerful landscape paintings, and Okada, who developed from the plein-air style to unique, gentle, and graceful female figures.
