This is a set of five Arita-yaki lidded small bowls. I previously listed and sold a similar set of these bowls. These thin porcelain bowls are perfect for serving appetizers, delicacies, or as sencha tea bowls. The following description is almost identical to the previous listing, except for the size. Arita-yaki painting styles are often categorized into three main types: Kakiemon, Nabeshima-han-gama, and Ko-Imari. These small bowls are in the (splendid) Ko-Imari style, characterized by red, blue, and gold painting. They are hand-painted with red and blue chrysanthemums, surrounded by blue and gold arabesque patterns. The chrysanthemum and arabesque pattern, known as "Kikukarakusa," is a lucky motif. Chrysanthemums, introduced as medicinal herbs, symbolize longevity, while arabesques, with their continuously extending vines, represent longevity and prosperity. The painting on the small bowls is not overly ornate, and the bowls are thinly made, with a thickness of about 1 mm for both the body and the lid. This combination enhances their delicacy and elegance. There are no potter's marks (underglaze marks), so the production period and kiln are unknown. Regarding the presence or absence of potter's marks, it is said that Ko-Imari, Arita-yaki from the Edo period, often lacked potter's marks, while they became more common after the Meiji era when Arita-yaki became widely known. Therefore, these small bowls may be old, but it's uncertain. All five bowls are in near-mint condition, with almost no stains, chips, or cracks. The sizes of the five bowls are almost identical. The following are the approximate measurements (in mm) and weight, using one bowl as a representative example: Height (without lid) 45, (with lid) 60 / Rim (inner diameter) 60, Foot 9, Foot diameter 30 / Lid outer diameter 56, Lid height 21, Knob diameter 20 / Weight (with lid) 54, 51, 51, 50, 42 g / These Arita-yaki chrysanthemum and arabesque patterned lidded small bowls are in near-mint condition. I hope you will enjoy using them for serving seasonal delicacies or as sencha tea bowls.
