His real name was Ando Shigeemon. His childhood name was Tokutaro, later Shigeemon, Tetsuzo, and also Tokubei. He was sometimes called "Ando Hiroshige," but Ando was his family name and Hiroshige was his art name, and it is inappropriate to combine the two. Hiroshige himself never used that name. He was born into the Ando family, who were firefighters in Edo, and inherited the family estate, after which he became a ukiyo-e artist.
