The paulownia tree was considered sacred as the tree where the phoenix resided. This idea spread to Japan, and from the Heian period, paulownia and phoenix patterns were used on the clothing and furnishings of the Emperor. The paulownia flower crest became a formal crest second only to the chrysanthemum crest. Size: Diameter approx. 15.4cm x 14.6cm Height approx. 3.7cm (Please allow for some margin of error) No box. One of the four plates has the paulownia pattern on the back missing (7th photo). No cracks or chips. As these are vintage items, all plates have spots and pinholes. Close-up photos of the most noticeable ones are included, but due to the number of plates, not all imperfections are shown.
