It is said to have originated in 1831, modeled after Nabeshima Dansu and Chinese rugs, and is considered one of the three major Dansu in Japan, along with Nabeshima and Ako. The design features crabs and peonies, symbolizing wealth and prosperity. The "peony," known as the king of flowers, represents prosperity, and the "crab," which holds scissors, is believed to cut off evil. This is a hand-woven cotton Dansu, which, unlike wool, is breathable, making it the perfect rug for Japan's humid climate. It's also warm in the winter, so it can be used year-round. As this item is an antique, there is a sense of use overall, including the texture, fading, dullness, and stains due to aging.
