This is a kuchi-nuri bon (lacquered tray), a classic item in antiques. From around the end of the Edo period. As the images show, there are scratches, stains, and flaking lacquer commensurate with its age, as well as chips, cracks, and insect damage. However, this worn condition is irresistible. I feel like the number of these has decreased dramatically in recent years. The condition is poor, but it can still be used as a dokujaku-bon (a tray for enjoying sake alone). There is some warping, so it may rotate slightly when placed on a flat surface, but according to one theory, this is to create a gap with the tatami mat, making it easier to lift with your fingers when placed on a tatami floor.
