It is said that it flourished as the fundamental dojo of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism by Kukai, who studied "Esoteric Buddhism." At the Shushō-e (New Year's Ceremony) held on January 3rd every year, the monks pray for the Yakuyoke Gohoin (evil-warding sacred seal) in the Miei-do Hall, and then the vermilion seal is pressed on the pillars of the hall and the heads of the monks, after which the Gohoin is given to the visitors.
