The mysterious weapon group, the Jovian Lizards, suddenly appeared from the Jupiter sector and, with overwhelming combat power, successively conquered Mars and the far side of the Moon. Now, numerous motherships called Tulips have landed in various parts of Earth. In 2196, in order to rescue the people left behind on Mars, which had fallen under the control of the Jovian Lizards, the private company Nergal Heavy Industries planned the "Scaparelli Project" and completed the outfitting of the experimental battleship ND-001 Nadesico, the core of the project. Under the policy of "first-class ability is all that matters, personality is not," the crew was assembled with individuals who were all eccentric in their own way. On the day of Nadesico's launch, the young man Akito Tenkawa, born on Mars, sneaks aboard Nadesico just before departure, chasing after his childhood friend Yurika Misumaru, whom he coincidentally meets again.
