These are silk-covered Bonchochin lanterns, known as Gifu chochin. They have been used for only 3 days during one season and are free of stains and scratches (based on a visual inspection). They are used not only for the Obon festival but also as interior decorations for enjoying the cool evening air. When the lamp is lit, the convection of air caused by the heat of the light bulb creates a revolving lantern effect, similar to a revolving lantern.
