Hajikami Shrine is the only shrine in Japan that enshrines the god of spices. Located in the joint territory of Futsukaichi-machi and Hanazono Hachiman-machi, in the northern suburbs of Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, it is an ancient shrine with a history of 1,300 years, listed in the Engishiki, with the main deities being Hajikami no Kami and Ichikoku Issha Gokoku Shohachiman no Kami. The name of the shrine comes from the ancient word for things that are spicy when chewed with the teeth, such as ginger, wasabi, and Japanese pepper: "薑・椒 (hajikami)". At the "Hajikami Grand Festival" (commonly known as the ginger festival), held every year on June 15th when the young leaves are flourishing, purified ginger tea is offered to the worshipers. In the area from Morishita River to Tsubata River, there were constant disputes among villagers due to water shortages in the fields. Then, Chuhashi Kyuzaemon, a government official of the Kaga clan who lived in Tsubata village, visited Hajikami Shrine, and a white fox, a messenger of the gods, came to his house. Following the fox's footprints and digging a waterway, water gushed out vigorously, becoming the present-day Kawaraichi irrigation canal.
