Couple's Zori & Geta 【Origin and Features of Tsugaru-nuri】 Tsugaru-nuri, a specialty of Aomori, dates back over two hundred years. The fourth feudal lord of Tsugaru, Nobumasa Tsugaru, planted and cultivated lacquer trees to achieve self-sufficiency in lacquer production and promote lacquer craftsmanship. He employed Genbei Ikeda, a lacquer craftsman from Wakasa, and vigorously encouraged this path. After Genbei's death, his son, Gentaro, went to Edo and became a disciple of Kanchichi Aomi, undergoing rigorous training to master the art. Upon his return, he was cleaning the lacquer boards used daily and, while polishing them with a whetstone, various unique and curious patterns emerged. Inspired by this, he created the technique. Tsugaru-nuri was once called "Kara-nuri" and, at some point, was also known as "Tsugaru's Fool's Lacquer." The process involves applying cloth to the wooden base and coating it with various colors of lacquer, then polishing it repeatedly, often dozens of times. The production time is at least a month, and some items take over a year to complete. This process creates unique patterns, and its elegance and durability are unmatched. Recently, its true value has been increasingly recognized, and it is widely used nationwide for household items, as well as for commemorative gifts and presents. Furthermore, Tsugaru-nuri also includes artistic masterpieces such as "Nanako-nuri" and "Wata-nuri," which are created using special techniques. Their poetry, paintings, and lacquer carvings are among the finest lacquer crafts in Japan.
