This is a Buddhist rosary made with striped ebony (shimakokutan) and tiger's eye, with silk tassels. Striped ebony is a prized wood from the persimmon family, known for its distinctive black and brown stripes. It is very hard and, when polished, has a smooth feel and luster. I think it can be used regardless of age.
