Gabbeh, woven to be fluffy, is originally lightweight. For nomads traveling through harsh nature such as mountains and deserts, it serves as a convenient rug for travel, bedding, and sometimes as a cover to protect donkeys and chickens on cold nights. In recent years, due to the popularity of Gabbeh in Europe and Japan, the production for export as interior items such as rugs and wall hangings has also increased. The Gabbeh woven by the Qashqai people was registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2012.
