The entire piece is made of French silver (95% silver content), and the part that touches the mouth (the upper part of the cup) is vermeil (gold-plated over sterling silver). Normally, they are only available in silver, so this is not a general retail item but a custom order. The box is gold-stamped with the crest of a count's family, indicating it was commissioned by a European count's family. It has the hallmark of the Cardeilhac workshop (Ernest Cardeilhac 1851-1904). It is a genuine antique, having been made over 100 years ago. I am moved to think that it has survived two world wars and many upheavals, overcoming the turbulent times and is here today. By the way, Cardeilhac was founded by Antoine-Vital Cardeilhac, and this piece was made during the time of his grandson, Ernest Cardeilhac. Cardeilhac became part of Christofle in 1951, but they continued to carry on the design of the works. Currently, they are taking orders for coffee spoons at a price of over 200,000 yen per piece.
