This is a firefighter's sashiko hanten (padded work coat). The indigo-dyed cotton fabric is entirely covered with sashiko stitching, making it a durable material. On the reverse side, a brave depiction of a young warrior on a dappled horse galloping is drawn. I believe the era is around the late Edo period.
