Togo Steel is a rare special steel imported from England in the early Showa era. It is named after Admiral Heihachiro Togo of the Meiji Navy, due to its superior sharpness and durability. It is a fusion of Tamahagane (Japanese steel) and Western steel, possessing the good qualities of both: the fineness of Japanese steel and the toughness of Western steel. Furthermore, "Betsudachi" (Special-made) indicates that it was made with extra care, unlike standard products. The sharpness of the blade is estimated at about 70% for both horizontal and vertical cuts, assuming a freshly sharpened blade is 100%.
