Tchaikovsky was born in 1840. That means the record industry should have celebrated his 150th birthday in 1990, but I don't have any vivid memories of it. Perhaps he drew the short straw because of the 1991 Mozart Year (which was celebrated very lavishly, not only by the record industry, but also by the publishing industry!). Also, Tchaikovsky died in 1893, so his 100th death anniversary should have been celebrated in 1993. He's a popular composer in Japan, and he was also a topic of conversation due to his homosexuality, which became known with the spread of AIDS. Anyway, his name is well-known, so the record industry should have found it easy to do business. However, I don't remember that being a big deal either.
