This is a raw, unsewn silk dyed komon (small pattern) fabric. It's a high-quality piece, dyed in Kyoto. Good dyeing means the dye penetrates thoroughly, even to the back of the fabric. See image 7. As an exception, there are also high-quality Edo komon, which are stencil-dyed and don't show dye on the back! This item was unearthed from a storage room and has been preserved for a long time. I haven't opened the entire length, but I haven't found any stains or dirt so far. It seems suitable for making clothes, handicrafts, and of course, kimono.
