"Nipopo" is an Ainu word meaning "small wooden child" or "doll." It is believed to grant any wish and bring happiness, and it is said that they were placed in Ainu homes as amulets to protect against illness and injury. They are also known as souvenirs from Hokkaido. Some are hand-carved by inmates of Abashiri Prison, hoping for rehabilitation. I bought and displayed this in Hokkaido.
