Teraoka Genzan Daishi Temple (Teraoka Sangan Daishi) 871 Teraoka-cho, Ashikaga City Located on the border of Ashikaga City and Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture, its official name is Teraoka Seyakuin Yakushiji Temple. It was founded by the order of Prince Shotoku, and according to temple tradition, it was also called "Shimotsuke Hachi Yakushi" (Eight Yakushi of Shimotsuke). The temple has a history of not taking parishioners and only offering prayers. It is said that Kawasaki Daishi and Nishi-Arai Daishi gathered the temple's glory and faith. The principal image, Genzan Daishi, is named Ryogen and his posthumous name is Jikei Daishi. He came to be called Genzan Daishi because he passed away on the third day of the New Year. Therefore, the third day of every month is the Ennichi (auspicious day). He is said to have strong spiritual power, and anecdotes remain about him as an incarnation of a demon and a dragon. The amulet with his image on a pillar is popular among visitors as a charm to ward off evil, and is often placed at the entrance of a home. It is said that those who believe in the principal image, Genzan Daishi, will be free from misfortune and their family fortunes will last forever.
