This is a hikiri (bamboo lid rest) made by Soshuku Kagebayashi. A bamboo lid rest is called a hikiri, and it is said to be derived from the fact that it is cut while leaving the bamboo joint. It is also called "hikkiri" and is used with the root of the bamboo facing upwards. Of the two, the one with the joint in the middle is used for the ro (sunken hearth), and the one with the joint at the top is used for the furo (portable brazier).
